Inventory:
- Nightwing uniform - body armor specially made by Mr. Terrific to be thin enough to wear under regular clothing. It's bulletproof and stab resistant. Boots and gloves have built-in compartments that hold the items that he needs. Currently this includes lockpicks and extra earbuds for communication. The mask has lenses that can switch from one-way (hides his eyes) to infrared to allow him to see opponents in the dark or after smoke bombs have been thrown.
- Escrima sticks - Nightwing's weapon of choice is two escrima sticks that he uses primarily to disarm and knock out opponents. His current sticks are also multi-purpose, containing smoke pellets, grapple line (to turn the stick into a trapeze grapple swing), and flares. They can also connect together to become a makeshift bo staff, meant to be passed off to Tim Drake when they fight together.
- Consumables: Inside the gauntlets, boots and escrima sticks are:
- Smoke pellets (6)
- Tracers (6)
- Wingdings (modified Batarangs) (3)
- Rebreather (1) - provides 2.5 hours of oxygen
- Flex cuffs (6)
- Lollipops (3)
- Haley - A small, grey, pit/bully type puppy missing a front leg. Absolutely normal otherwise.
Powers —
Skills:
Peak human condition
Though there's nothing superhuman about him, Dick is to be the greatest human acrobat in DC and the only person on Earth who can do the quadruple somersault on the trapeze. He has fantastic core and arm strength, agility and hand-eye coordination. His gymnastic and trapeze training started at a very early age, which was only built on by his superhero training with Bruce Wayne.
Martial Arts and weapons training - Dick is a master of various forms of martial arts, including aikido, kung fu, escrima, Capoeira, judo, hapkido, taekwondo, jujitsu, karate, jeet kune do, savate (French kickboxing), sambo (Russian martial art centered on wrestling), ninjutsu, bojutsu, and Western boxing. His primary weapons are escrima sticks, with his current weaponry made of an unbreakable polymer. He is also skilled with thrown weaponry, as evidenced by the use of both his own wingdings as Nightwing and Batarangs as Batman or Robin.
Computer skill and hacking - Though Tim and Barbara are the family computer experts and hackers, Dick is also able to hold his own when necessary.
Languages - As a combination of his early years in a very multicultural circus as well as the finest education Bruce Wayne could provide, Dick is fluent in Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, and Cantonese. As a result of his time with Kori'ander, he's also fluent in Tamaranian. He's also conversant in American Sign Language, French, Italian, Persian, and Kikuyu (a Bantu language). He also knows bits and pieces of Romany, though he's very out of practice.
Various Bat Skills - Trained by Batman in escapolgy, criminology, fencing, stealth, and disguise. He is shown to have the natural ability to read body motion as Cassandra Cain does. He is able to anticipate and predict a person's actions and tell if somebody is lying. He also possesses a will strong enough to protect himself from telepathic attacks. He's also a master of espionage, though that was put on display more in the later ongoing, Grayson. Dick was once widely accepted as the second greatest detective in the DC world, behind Batman, due to his own fantastic feats of deduction. Now, though, he would rank himself after Tim.
Superpowers:
- Moderate healing factor (non-canon) - Dick heals faster than human baseline. Not instantly, but injuries that would normally keep him down for weeks will heal in a few days.
- Invulnerability for Haley (non-canon) - It might just be luck, but no harm can come to the puppy.
Limitations:
- Absolutely normal - In the ways that count, at least. Despite the training and the fact that Dick is one of the best in the business in his world, he's only human. There's no super speed, no super strength. Just normal, squishy human.
- Moral code - Dick's moral compass has been influenced by his parents, the Batman and Alfred Pennyworth. He will fight to injure, but he refuses to kill. Even the man who killed his parents deserves to face a jury of his peers, no matter how tempted Dick is to do otherwise. He also will be one of the first to put himself between others and danger, despite the aforementioned 'absolutely normal' limitation.
- Lack of tech/money/connections - During his long career as a hero, Dick has never had to really go without in terms of technology, thanks to access to Bruce and Wayne Industries/Technology/whatever the company is called at the moment. While he, personally, has been broke more than a few times, he's never been that concerned because he knows Bruce wouldn't let him fall, nor would any of his friends. And replacing the items that he has with him will start to be a problem as they're used.
- Brain injury - Dick isn't very long off of having had a massive brain injury that made it possible for the Court of Owls to get in and change his personality and leave his family behind. While that has been fixed, he's still more susceptible to head injuries than most.
Personality —
Dick is the outgoing, personable member of the Batfamily. He's the first son, Batman's heir who remembers when the Batman's mission wasn't all about darkness. He grew up learning how to balance Dick Grayson against Robin and managed to find an easy medium for himself. This kept up into his adulthood when he struck out on his own, so that neither is a mask that he wears. He is Dick Grayson and he is Nightwing (or Batman) and entirely comfortable as either.
A former circus brat, Dick's never quite lost the taste for performing. He can't go out in front of a crowd and do the tricks his parents taught him, but it doesn't stop him from showing off just the slightest bit (okay, a lot) when working. He's a genuinely likable guy who believes in justice and doing what is right, but there are lines that the good guys just don't cross. He doesn't shy away from confrontation and is always willing to be there to back up friends and family who need him. And most of his oldest friends ARE part of his family (whether Bruce likes it or not). Dick is probably the most well-liked hero in his world amongst his peers and is one of a very small number that many of them would follow without question.
There are, of course, downsides. Dick tends to care a little too much. He doesn't hold himself apart from others well, which feeds into a tendency to blame himself for things that happen on his watch. He blames himself when people end up hurt under his leadership and he has a bad tendency to either quit or disband groups when it gets to be too much for him to handle. He can never stay away for long, though, because most of the people he's worked with on teams are old, old friends that he would never turn away from. Though that closeness can and has led to him overlooking problems simply because he sees what he expects to see. (That's the only reason I can come up with for Batman's apprentice missing things like Roy being addicted to heroin, at least.) He also has a daredevil streak a mile wide and two miles deep. It gets him in trouble, even though he does tend to think before he acts.
At the moment, Dick is still recovering from two major blows to his life: the bullet to the head that helped erase so much of his life, and the death of Alfred Pennyworth, who was basically another father to him. He's thrown himself into trying to make Bludhaven better in a way he hasn't tried before because he didn't have the resources. He's letting his compassion lead the way, providing a better example for the people of Bludhaven and allowing the city to show its true colors. He's reconnected with friends, remembering that he doesn't have to go it alone. Finding stability with Barbara Gordon and Haley. In his final letter, Alfred said that Dick could be one of the "greatest forces for good this world has ever seen".
He's just hoping he can live up to it.
Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:
Dick, at least, is used to the idea of multiverses, so finding versions of people that he knows but doesn't won't be that alien. And, frankly, the Bats need an adultier adult to help out. While that would normally be Barbara (who is, frankly, the adultiest adult), Dick doesn't do a bad job. And also keeping people together though the glue of his indomitable will and putting Haley in people's arms because who could be mad at an adorable puppy?
I don't really tend to come into games with much of a plan, as I much prefer to see where things go. Still, with so many Bats and DC folk around, Dick will probably find himself more in the middle of things than one might expect. But, then, that's where you'd usually find him, anyway.
